New York is the city of skyscrapers. The highest skyscraper is the Empire State Building. It has 102 stories and its height is 380 meters. Not far from the Empire State Building is Rockefeller Center. Rockefeller Center Houses all kinds of offices, enterprises, theatres and music halls. Wall Street is the financial heart of the USA. The National Bank and large offices are situated there. Broadway is the longest street in the city. It is 29 kilometers long. Broadway is the street of the best known theatres and cinemas. The Statue of Liberty greets everybody who comes to New York by sea. Millions of emigrants from all parts of the world cross the ocean, hoping to find a better and happier life there. II. Вариант 3. I. Переведите текст в письменной форме. Washington. Washington is the capital of the United States. It is situated on the Potomac River in the District of Columbia. Washington is not the largest city in the United States but in the political sense it is the most important city. Washington has one major business and that business is government. Many people living in Washington work for the federal government. At 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue there is the White House where the President lives and has his office. The Capitol, with its great Hall of Representatives and the Senate, is the highest building in Washington. There is a law against building structures more than 90 feet high in the capital. With its beautiful buildings and its three-lined avenues Washington attracts a lot of visitors. The capital has world-known art galleries, museums and monuments. One of the most interesting museums in Washington is the National Art and Space Museum. The museum has aircraft and spacecraft that were important in aviation history. Вариант 4. I. Переведите текст в письменной форме. Distance Education over the World. Distance education over the world has a history of more than 100 years. But it gained popularity only after 1970’s. Many countries like China, England, Japan, Russia, Spain and the USA use this method, especially in higher education. For example, the Open University in England has more than 80 000 students who take about 140 courses per year. This university has 260 local teaching and 13 information centers. Such factors as age, place, and daily activity do not serve as limiting factors in distance education. Distance education has two main advantages over traditional classroom education. The first advantage is a solution to the problem of teaching staff shortage and the second one is the low cost of education which gives many people an opportunity to receive higher education. Вариант 5. I. Переведите текст в письменной форме. “O” Level and “A” Level Examinations. Pupils at secondary schools in England (that is, pupils between the age of twelve and eighteen) have two main exams to worry about. They take the first one when they are about fifteen. It is called “O” (ordinary) level. Many pupils take “O” level in about seven or eight different subjects. There are a lot of subjects to choose from carpentry to ancient languages. For a lot of jobs it’s quite enough to have four or five “O” levels and usually these include English and Math. Some pupils leave school when they are fifteen. But if they stay at school, they go to the sixth form and start working for second main exam: “A” (advanced) level. It’s a difficult exam, so pupils don’t usually take it in more than three subjects. Three “A” levels are enough to go to the university. But if they want to go to such universities as Oxford and Cambridge they take special exams as well. It covers a total area of over 17 million square kilometers. The country washed in the North by the Arctic Ocean and its seas: the Barents, Chukchee, East Siberian, Kara, Laptev and White Seas, in the South by the Black, Azov and Caspian Seas, in the East by the Bering Sea, the of Japan and Okhotsk Sea, in the West by the Baltic Sea. Russia encompasses within its territory immense differences in climate, economic conditions and cultural traditions. It is one of the largest administrative areas in the world. The immensity of the Russian Federation is hard to imagine. A flight from Moscow to Magadan takes eight hours. Russia borders on fourteen countries including the former republics of the USSR, which are now independent states. Russia is reach in mineral resources. Its population is about 9 million people. In the West End there are many famous museums, theatres, palaces and parks. The British Museum is one of the most-famous museums in the world. It contains the most important collection of things from Greece and Egypt, including the famous Egyptian mummies. The West End includes Trafalgar Square, Piccadilly Circus and the main shopping areas of Oxford Street, Regent Street and Bond Street. The Houses of Parliament built in the 19th century, are the place where the English Government sits. Big Ben is the name given to the clock and the bell of the clock tower of the Houses of Parliament. The great bell weighs thirteen and a half tons. Buckingham Palace is the home of Britain’s Kings and Queens. Every day a lot of tourists come to see the ceremony of Changing the Guard in front of Buckingham Palace. The East End grew with the spread of industries to the east of the City, and the growth of the port of London. It is one of those areas of London where people from abroad have come to find work. The North Dvina, the three mighty Siberian rivers: Ob, Lena and Enisei, and the Amur rank with the Nile and the Amazon among the world’s longest rivers. The largest of all Russia’s rivers is the Volga. This river is a major transport rout from North to South and source of hydroelectric energy. It rises north of Moscow and Valdai Hills. The three largest lakes in Russia are Baikal in South-Eastern Siberia and Ladoga and Onega in Northern Russia. Baikal is the world’s most ancient lake and the deepest one. It contains one-fifth of the world’s fresh water. The relief of Russia is mostly flat. Russia is located on two plains: the Great Russian Plain and the Western Siberian Plain. There are three main mountain chains in Russia. The Caucasus is a range of mountains which extends from the Black Sea to the Caspian Sea. The highest mountain in the Caucasus, in the Russian Federation and in the whole Europe is Mount Elbrus. |
